Rhodes Athletic Hall of Fame
Mason Mosby’s senior year campaign was arguably one of the greatest single seasons in the history of Rhodes College Athletics. Mason set the modern-day record for highest single-season batting average (.454) and home runs (8) in the same year that he was selected as the SCAC Football Defensive Player of the Year, when he set single-season Rhodes Football records for total and solo tackles.
Mason had a rare set of skills that served him as well on the diamond as on the gridiron. He was one of the fastest players as well as one of the strongest, a rare combination! In baseball, at the time of his graduation, he was plastered all over the modern-day record books. He finished his baseball career with the highest career batting average (.404); the third-highest record in most home runs (15); the second-most stolen bases (76); and the most career triples (17). He still owns the single-season record in batting average (.454), runs scored (62), hits (73), and triples (7). He was selected to the All SCAC baseball team in 2007 and 2009 and was a member of the winningest team in Rhodes Baseball history in 2007 (36 wins). Coach Cleanthes still remembers that halfway through his senior campaign Mason was leading the league in hitting, home runs, and stolen bases, something that doesn’t happen very often.
During Mason’s career in football he was selected as the 2008 SCAC defensive player of the year and made the All SCAC defensive team in both 2007 and 2008. He was also a D-III football All South Region Linebacker in 2008. He still holds the Rhodes football record in most tackles in a season (118) and most solo tackles (66). Once again, his rare combination of speed and strength played a major role in his outstanding career on the Lynx football field.
Mason was thought of by his teammates as an incredibly competitive athlete, but also as a great leader and teammate. He was as tough as they come on the athletic field, starting in both baseball and football for his entire career, but he carried himself with grace and humility off the field. In recognition of his hard work and dedication to Lynx Athletics, Rhodes is honored to induct Mason Mosby into the Rhodes Athletics Hall of Fame this 30th day of September, 2023.
