At the beginning of his freshman year, Mallory Chamberlin walked up to a cross-country practice and asked Coach Bill Mabry if he could try out for the team. Coach Mabry told Mallory he could join practice “and keep up the best he could.” Mallory Chamberlin not only kept up, he became one of Rhodes’ greatest distance runners.

After winning the mile, 880 and two-mile runs in a meet against Austin Peay his freshman year, the Memphis Press-Scimitar ran the headline “Mallory May Raise Some Eyebrows.” Indeed Mallory did. He set a new record in the mile with a time of 4:27 and a new record in the 880 record to 1:57 at the Tennessee Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet.

As Coach Freeman Marr stated, “If Mallory Chamberlin had been able to focus on just one event, there is no telling how fast he could have run the 880 and mile. He always ran a number of events and relays to help the team.” At the 1960 NCAA College Division Cross-Country Championships in Chicago, Mallory placed 45th out of 137 runners. He was named the Most Valuable Runner on the 1962 Lynx cross-country team.

Mallory majored in English with a minor in philosophy. He served as sports editor for the Sou’wester and he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

Mallory Chamberlin set a standard of excellence in the 880, mile and two-mile runs, which inspires current Rhodes athletes. His unselfishness and dedication to his teammates are attributes we emphasize to Rhodes athletes today. We are proud to induct Mallory Chamberlin into the Rhodes Athletic Hall of Fame this 20th day of October, 2006.
