As an outstanding catcher in baseball and cornerback in football, Robbie Baker used his great hands, keen eyes and superb timing to become one of Rhodes all-time great two-sport athletes. By the end of his career at Rhodes, Robbie established himself as an outstanding student, and a committed and dedicated athlete with a great work-ethic.

The 1985 Lynx football team compiled an 8-1-1 record and won the College Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship. Robbie Baker was a mainstay for the Lynx defensive backfield at corner. He was recognized Honorable Mention All CAC in 1985. In 1986, Robbie’s senior year, he led the College Athletic Conference in interceptions and was named 1st Team All CAC.

In the 1980’s NCAA Division III baseball teams could play 50 or more games. On one occasion Robbie caught a triple header in one day. As a four-year starter at catcher, he caught more games than any Lynx in baseball history. With Robbie Baker behind the plate, Rhodes won back-to-back College Athletic Conference baseball titles in 1986 and 1987.

Robbie has always had a knack for connecting with talent, evidenced by his marriage to alumna Melissa Hayes, who was inducted into the Rhodes Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. Robbie and Melissa have become the first husband and wife to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Whether it has been as a great husband and parent, an engaged student, a dedicated athlete, a successful business professional, Robbie Baker has personified loyalty and excellence. For his love of his coaches, teammates and classmates, Rhodes is honored to induct GEORGE ROBERT BAKER, JR. into the Rhodes Athletic Hall of Fame this 10th day of October, 2014.
