Rhodes Athletic Hall of Fame
One of the most versatile athletes to ever compete for the Lynx, Smoky Russell played every position in the offensive backfield on the football team and was a multi-event performer in track and field. Smoky led several student organizations during his time on-campus and he has been an engaged and committed alumnus.
As a linebacker on defense, Smoky served as the Defensive Captain. He was like having a coach on the field. In fact, Hall of Fame Coach Rick Mays had so much confidence in Smoky’s football savvy, he allowed Smoky to call all of the defensive plays without any signals from the sidelines.
Smoky was often the high point man in track meets due to his versatility. During his three years on the track and field team he competed in the 100, 220, hurdles, javelin, shot and discus.
Smoky’s contributions to the Southwestern community did not stop at the athletic fields. He was an honor student and leader of several prestigious student organizations. Smoky served as president of both the Honor Council and the Omicron Delta Kappa chapter. Smoky was an active member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. For his academic and athletic success, and his involvement in numerous student organizations, Smoky was selected as a member of the 1956 Student Body Hall of Fame.
Since graduating with honors in 1956, Smoky has served Rhodes for over fifty years in various capacities. In 1964-1965 he served as President of the Alumni Association, and he has been a member of the Red and Black Society for years.
Smoky Russell embodies all of the ideals of the student-athlete and the servant leader. For his academic and athletic success, and his commitment and dedication to his alma mater, Rhodes is honored to induct GEORGE M. “SMOKY” RUSSELL into the Rhodes Athletic Hall of Fame this 25th day of October, 2013.
