Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rhodes Falls On Senior Night

After honoring the lone Lynx Senior, Kory Kilpatrick, the Lynx fought hard for forty minutes on Sunday, January 5th, but fell short over the last three minutes of the game and lost their final home game of the season to Birmingham Southern College 66 to 76.  Rhodes tied the game at 60 on an Andrew Galow three pointer with 3:29 seconds remaining on the clock, but a three-pointer by Birmingham's Jasen Jonus with the shot clock expiring and two minutes remaining was the dagger giving Birmingham a 65 to 61 lead.  Rhodes kept it close but would not get any closer than four over the last 90 seconds.

It was 'Senior Night' for the Lynx, as they honored Senior Kory Kilpatrick on his four year career as a member of the Rhodes Lynx basketball program.  Kilpatrick had a nice night with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Rhodes fell behind the conference leading Birmingham Southern Panthers early as they trailed 13 to 19 over the first eight minutes.  The Lynx were not to go away as a pair of three point field goals by Patrick McGrail helped the Lynx grab a lead at 23 to 21.  Anyone in the gym could tell this was going to be a back and forth battle all night long, as the Panthers took a two point lead into the break, 36 to 34.

Birmingham grabbed an eight point lead 58 - 50 with 8:04 remaining in the left, and it looked like all the momentum was going away from the Lynx.  However, Rhodes was ready to fight back.  Rhodes used a 10 - 2 run over the next four minutes and change to knot the game up at 60.  Junior Andrew Galow paced the Lynx with 8 of 10 points during this run, and finished the night with 14 points and 4 assists.

The backbreaker came when Birmingham's Jasen Jonus knocked down a 30-foot three point field goal with the shot clock buzzer sounding, giving the Panthers a 65 to 61 lead with 2 minutes remaining.  Rhodes would get it as close as four multiple times over the last 2 minutes, but Birmingham connected on free throws down the stretch.  The Panthers were led by three players in double figures.

Rhodes was sparked all night by a tremendous effort from Junior Forward Theo Hartwell who finished the night with a game-high 17 points and game-high 13 rebounds.  This double-double marks season highs in both categories for Hartwell.

Rhodes falls to 14-8 overall and 9-4 in the SCAC.  It is a shorter week for the Lynx as they play only one game at Millsaps College on Saturday at 5pm.  Rhodes has clinched a playoff spot in the SCAC tournament, but will be competing for the #2 seed with the three games down the stretch.
