The Rhodes Lynx snuck out a close one Friday, February 3rd against Oglethorpe University 65 to 62. Both teams offense sputtered in the second half, but a game winning three point basket with 4.2 seconds remaining by Sophomore
Johnny Dunavant gave the Lynx the victory. Dunavant finished the night with 12 points, Hartwell chipped in 12 as well, while Junior
Andrew Galow led the Lynx with 17 points.
Rhodes and Oglethorpe were feeling it offensively in the first half, as the teams combined to shoot over 55% and dropped in 13 three point baskets. Rhodes grabbed a lead late in the half with back to back three pointers by Sophomore
Michael Gallagher and headed into the locker room up by three points. Galow paced the Lynx with 11 points in the first frame.
Both teams were unable to find their offensive rhythm in the second half. Oglethorpe could not find the range from distance (2 for 16 from three) and Rhodes missed inside opportunities and turned the ball over ten times. With 17:38 remaining, Oglethorpe grabbed their first lead of the second half and the Lynx were on their heels.
A back and forth battle saw the visitors grab their biggest lead of the night at 57 to 53 on an offensive rebound put back by Oglethorpe Senior Steioff. Steioff finished the night with a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds. However, the Lynx responded with five of their own, including three free throws by
Johnny Dunavant to grab a 58 to 57 lead. Shortly after a three pointer by Oglethorpe's Cerone saw the game knot up at 60 with 3:24 on the clock.
The Lynx scored out of a timeout to snag a two point advantage with three minutes remaining. Not going away, Oglethorpe's Pitts got a steal and went the length of the court to tie the game with 23.5 seconds left. Pitts led Oglethorpe in scoring with 17 and added 6 steals.
In the final possession, the Lynx found an open Dunavant on the left wing as he drained a contested three point field goal to give the Lynx the lead with 4.2 seconds on the clock. The final seconds saw Pitts grab a loose ball and miss a three pointer off the glass at the buzzer.
With the win the Lynx move to 14 wins and 7 losses on the season and bolster their conference record to 9 wins and 3 losses. Rhodes hits the hardwood again on Sunday at 3pm to avenge a previous loss to Birmingham-Southern College. A win on Sunday has the Lynx in the hunt for the #1 seed in the SCAC tournament.
