Rhodes used a dominate second half on Saturday night, December 17th, to defeat the Huntingdon College Hawks, 84 to 59. After a first half that looked as though the Lynx were already on Christmas break, Rhodes came out with a fire in the second half and outscored the Hawks, 46 to 26. With the victory, the Lynx move on to play the winner of Berry College vs. University of Chicago in the Championship game of the Rhodes Christmas Invitational - sponsored by Crowne Plaza Downtown.
A slow and uneventful first half saw the Lynx get behind early. Rhodes trailed over the first ten minutes of the game, but stiffened the defense late in the half to take a slight advantage. Going into the break, Rhodes led 38 to 33. Lucky to be ahead, the Lynx limited Huntingdon to only one offensive rebound and committed only 4 turnovers.
From the second half whistle it was a different Lynx team on the court. Crisp passes seemed to fly around the court, as the Lynx added 15 assists in the second half (25 for the game). The defense kept the Hawks in front of them and Rhodes dominated the boards. The Lynx finished the night with a plus 17 rebounding advantage.
Off the bench, Freshman Tripp Drummond sparked the Lynx on both ends of the court by diving on loose balls and attacking the glass. Drummond had a team-high 13 points on a perfect night of 5-5 from the field, including 3 rebounds. Senior
Kory Kilpatrick played a fantastic second half, finishing the night with 11 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds. While Junior
Andrew Galow chipped in his own 12 points, 5 assists, and 6 rebounds.
Johnny Dunavant and
Patrick McGrail also scored 11 and 9 points respectively.
The Lynx shot 57% for the night and held the Hawks to 35% shooting. With the victory the Lynx move to 7-2 on the season and will play for the tournament championship tomorrow at 3pm.
