ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore
Sara Lynn Abbott was victorious in a super tiebreaker, 12-10, with the match on the line against Northwestern (MN) to lead the Rhodes College women's tennis team to a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the Lynx were victorious over the Aquinas Saints, picking up a 7-2 win. Rhodes started the match with a sweep at doubles beginning with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles by senior
Anna Volkov and sophomore
Caroline Doherty.
Rhodes then got a pair of 8-3 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by Abbot and freshman
Natalie Arnold as well as the freshman team of
Madeleine McDonald and
Mary Mullen.
Rhodes carried that momentum into singles as Arnold picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles while Doherty won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Abbott was victorious at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Volkov was also victorious at No. 2 singles by the score of 6-1, 6-3.
Later that evening, the Lynx and Eagles squared off in an epic match, as the Lynx took the doubles point 2-1. Arnold and Abbott won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2, while Doherty and Volkov won a thriller at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (6).
In singles, Volkov picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles while Arnold won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Abbott clinched the match 6-7 (5), 6-2, 12-10 in an epic conclusion with the match tied at four a piece.
Rhodes moves to 7-4 overall and will conclude their spring break trip on Friday as they will take on Judson at 8 AM.
