MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's tennis team defeated Division II cross-town rival Christian Brothers, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Dunavant Tennis Complete to move to 3-0 on the young season.

The Lynx started well at doubles as the No. 2 team of freshman Sara Lynn Abbott and junior Morgan Wilkins defeated Melody Mays and Tyler Napier, 8-2, to give Rhodes the early lead. CBU responded with a win at No. 1 doubles as the attention turned to No. 3 doubles as to who would gain the advantage going into singles.

The team of senior Annie Thomas and freshman Jessie Amaro broke through and earned the victory over Rebecca Johnston and Carley Lane, defeating the duo 8-6 to give Rhodes a key 2-1 lead going into singles.

Wilkins pushed the lead to 3-1 as she defeated Lane at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. After CBU got a point back at No. 1 singles, the Lynx moved one point closer to clinching as Amaro defeated Mays in dominant fashion at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

The Bucs did not go down quietly, making it a 4-3 match with a win at No. 2 singles. However, Rhodes clinched as Abbott earned a hard fought victory at No. 4 singles, coming-from-behind to win 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5. Moments later, Thomas clinched her match in straight set over Napier, 6-2, 6-1.

The Lynx sit at 3-0 and will return to action on Friday as they welcome in CBU, Delta State, Kentucky Wesleyan, Wesleyan (Ga.), and Tennessee State for the Southern Shootout at the Dunavant Tennis Complex. The Lynx will take on Kentucky Wesleyan and Wesleyan (Ga.) on Saturday at 4 PM and 7 PM.
