SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Rhodes field hockey team spread four goals to defeat Sewanee by a final score of 4-1, on Saturday at Puett Field.
With the win, the Lynx improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 Southern Athletic Association play, while the Tigers dropped to 2-5 on the year and 1-2 in the SAA.
Rhodes fired first when
Shauni Cowan found the back of the cage off of an
Evy Royther pass in the 13th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Sewanee found their way onto the board just nine minutes later when Janie Spilman worked in a goal. The 1-1 tie wouldn't stand for long, as Cowan netted her second goal of the contest, this time off a
Julie Hertzman pass, just before the half time break in the 33rd minute to take a 2-1 goal into the break.
Rhodes continued to add insurance to their lead when
Mary Rose Hazel scored her first goal of the season just four minutes into the second half of play. The Lynx would score their final goal of the contest in the 45th minute when Royther scored a goal of her own to make the final score 4-1 in favor of the Lynx.
Rhodes outshot Sewanee 28-8 in the contest and held a 19-4 edge on penalty corners.
Erin Bailey, who saw 56 minutes in the cage, grabbed four saves.
Laura Eckelkamp also got some time in the net for the Lynx, with 13 minutes in the game, where she snagged a save.
The Lynx will return home for their next four contests, starting with a conference matchup with Centre College on Oct. 4 at 12 p.m.
