3 on 3 Basketball Rules

Participation
  • Participants can play one only one 3 v 3 Team

The Game

  • There are no officials; teams are responsible to call their own games.
  • Score keepers will keep score and time
  • Two 10 minute halves with a running clock (1 minute intermission between halves)
  • The winner of the pre-game paper rock scissors will take first possession in the first half and the loser will have first possession in the second half.
  • Tie score at the end of regulation will result in a 2 minute overtime period. (Ball possession will be determined by a coin toss.) During league play only one overtime will be played. During playoffs we will repeat the overtime procedure until a winner has been determined, alternating possession with every new overtime.
  • Each team has one 20 second time out per half. Time outs can also be called by the score keeper (injuries and special circumstances)
  • Substitutions can be made after a basket, a foul shot, or a stoppage of play.
  • Ball possession changes after each basket unless a foul is awarded. Deliberate stalling or attempts to freeze the ball shall result in a loss of ball possession. If a team is warned for stalling, the score keeper will administer a 10 second count during which a shot must be attempted. If a shot is not attempted, ball possession is lost!
  • The imaginary "check line" is anywhere past the top of the three point line extended. A player must pass the ball in from the check line at the start of each half, after a score, and after a foul is awarded.
  • On defensive rebounds or turnovers the ball must be returned to the check line and the player in possession of the ball may retain possession and attempt to score
  • The clock will stop in the last minute of the second half for a dead ball (foul, injury, ball out-of-bounds). The clock will also stop, under the same circumstances, in the last minute of overtime.
  • If a player is fouled in the act shooting, as time expires in the second half, or overtime, and the player being fouled will be granted free throws - two free throws within the three point line, three free throws from behind the arc.
Fouls
  • NO DUNKING
  • All common personal fouls shall be counted against a team total.
  • Intentional, flagrant and technical fouls can all be grounds for disqualification from the contest and immediate suspension from further intramural participation. ANY FOUL deemed excessive will result in 1 free throw and retention of the ball.
  • In each half, a bonus will be awarded on and after the 10th team foul.
  • An individual player cannot foul out of a game, but may be ejected by the score keeper
  • Prior to the 10th team foul:
    • Any common foul shall result in a loss of possession for the offending team.
    • Any offensive foul shall result in the disallowance of a converted basket and a loss of possession.
    • Any shooting foul with a missed basket shall result in foul shots.
    • Any shooting foul with a converted basket shall result in the basket being awarded 1 free throw.
    • After all free throws the ball becomes live - either team can take possession.
  • On and after the 10th team foul:
    • Any common foul shall result in a single foul shot and played live on the make/miss.
    • All other rules remain the same
