5v5 Basketball Rules

5 on 5 Basketball Rules 
 
Participation:

A. Participants can appear on only one team's roster, regardless of division.  Teams can register for only one of the following divisions - Competitive or Recreational.  
 
Governing Rules:
 

A. NCAA Rules shall govern all play, with the exceptions listed on this rules sheet.  The Coordinator of Recreational Services shall determine final interpretations and modifications.

 B. Rhodes College guidelines concerning eligibility are in effect for the intramural basketball season.  If you do not have an R# you can’t play. C. NO DUNKING.  Slam Dunking, grabbing, or touching the rim prior to, during, or after the game is prohibited and will result in a technical foul. (officials have the right to call contact with the rim inadvertent)

D. Full Court Press can be utilized by a team only in the second half of a game and never when up by 15+ points over an opponent.

 
Equipment:
 
  1. Shoes; Players must wear athletic court type shoes.  Street shoes with black rubber soles and turf shoes will not be allowed.
 
  1. Hats; Hats will not be allowed to be worn during the game.  Bandanas may be worn as a headband.
 
  1. Jewelry: Earrings, rings, watches, bracelets and necklaces may not be worn during intramural competition.
 
  1. Jerseys: Each participant should obtain an intramural jersey when signing in for that day’s competition.  Be sure the jersey is worn correctly (not inside out!).  Be sure to return it when the game is over!!!
 
Forfeits, Number of Players and Captains:
 
  1. Teams must have four (4) players present to begin the game.  A team has a five (5) minute grace period after the scheduled start time to have its players present or it will forfeit that game.  .
 
  1. If, while playing with fewer than five (5) players, a team falls behind by more than twenty (20) points, the game shall be declared over.
 
  1. Team captains are the only players allowed to speak to the officials.
 
Ball Possession:
 
  1. Initial possession to begin the first half will be determined by a jump ball.
 
  1. After the initial possession, an alternating possession procedure will be used for all jump ball situations, as well as the beginning of the second half.
 
 
Game Timing:
 
  1. Two twenty-minute halves will constitute a game.  The clock will run continuously, stopping only for time-outs and all whistles during the last two minutes of the second half.  The clock will not stop in the last two minutes of the second half if one team is ahead by 15 points or more. The clock will stop, however, if the losing team comes within 15 points of the winning team in the last two minutes of the game.
 
B.         Overtime:
  • If the score is tied after the end of the second half, play shall continue for one two (2) minute overtime period with a one-minute intermission before the overtime begins.
  • The clock will stop in the overtime period in the same manner as the last two minutes of regulation time.
  • During regular season play there will be only one overtime period.  If the score is still tied the game will end in a tie.
  • During the playoffs, 2 minute overtime periods will be repeated until there is a winner.
 
  1. Three (3) time-outs will be allowed during the entire game.  One (1) time-out will be added during the overtime period. 
 
Fouls and Free Throws:
 
  1. If a player is fouled in the act of shooting and the attempt is unsuccessful, they will be awarded two (2) free throws.  If the attempt is successful, the shooter will be awarded (1) free throw.
 
  1. Beginning with a team’s 7th foul in each half, the opposing team will be awarded one free throw followed by a bonus free throw if the first is successful (except in the case of a player-control foul).
 
  1. Beginning with a team’s 10th foul in each half the opposing team will be awarded two free throws (except in the case of a player-control foul).
 
  1. Intentional fouls will result in two (2) free throws and retained possession of the ball by the offended team.
 
  1. A player will be disqualified from the contest upon being charged with his/her fifth foul of the game or upon being charged with his/her second technical foul of the game.
 
  1. A Flagrant Foul is a foul that, in the judgment of the official, is committed with excessive contact. A flagrant foul will result in an automatic disqualification of the guilty player. 
 
  1. A Technical Foul is a foul by a player or non-player which does not involve contact with an opponent or one which involves unsportsmanlike conduct with an opponent or an official.  A technical foul counts as a personal foul and a team foul.  The offended team shall receive two free throws and the ball out of bounds at mid-court.  Upon officials’ discretion, a technical foul can result in an automatic disqualification of the guilty player.
 
  1. A team will be disqualified upon being charged with three technical fouls during the game.  Such misconduct could result in the team being declared ineligible for further competition. (after each called foul the player must report their last name to the scorer's table)
 
  1. The referees have the authority to stop the game at any time and give one warning to players, captains, or spectators for unsportsmanlike conduct.  The supervisor has the authority to forfeit the game.
 

Substitutions

 
  1. Substitutions are allowed on dead ball situations only.
 
  1. All substitutions must check-in and enter the court from the scorer’s table.
 
 

Injured Players

 
  1. If help is given to assist an injured player he/she must be removed until the next opportunity to substitute.  Time must actually come off the clock prior to any legal re-entry.
 
  1. A player who is bleeding, oozing body fluids, has an open wound or has blood on their uniform is considered an injured player.  Such a player may not re-enter the game until the matter is corrected.
 

Miscellaneous

 
  1. Protests must be for rule interpretation and player eligibility only!  Players, captains, coaches, and spectators may not protest a judgment call.  THE TEAM’S CAPTAIN MAY ASK FOR AN EXPLANATION OF A CALL, BUT THERE WILL BE NO DEBATE ON A JUDGMENT CALL MADE BY THE REFEREES. The official’s word is final.
 
  1. ALL EJECTED PLAYERS must leave the Bryan Campus Life Center and is under suspension from further competition until a meeting has been arranged with Coach Wagner or Coach Chambers to discuss what occurred.
