Men's Track & Field Wins Third Straight & Fifth Overall SAA Championship

4/24/2021 9:46:00 PM

Memphis - Rhodes won its fifth Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Track and Field Championships in 2021, as did the women, making it the third straight year that the Lynx have swept the championships.

Athletes and fans endured a steady light rain for about an hour and a half in the afternoon, which extended over the 100m, 800m and 400m hurdles.

Rhodes held a three-point edge over Centre after six events were scored Friday night. The Lynx continued to hold the lead throughout score announcements on Saturday. A couple of key events endsured Rhodes' one-point  win over the Colonels (178-177).

  • A pack of five were at the front of the 1500m run with Toler Freyaldenhoven and Jared Briant in the mix. It appeared the Lynx would finish third and fourth, however Freyaldenhoven made sure to run through the finish line, stretching as he made his way across to second place. That motivation gave the Lynx two points they wouldn't have had otherwise.
  • With just two races to go and the scores still close between Rhodes and Centre, junior Billy Clark, one of the top five in the 200m prelims, came up injured before he could complete the turn in the finals. Clark made sure to finish the race, adding at least one more point to Rhodes' total.
  • It all came down to the 4x400m relay where the perfect storm needed to happen now that Clark couldn't perform in the race. Briant was called upon to run in his place. The Lynx needed to finish in at least fourth place and they needed Centre to finish no higher than second place. BSC won the final relay with Centre coming in second, Berry third, and Rhodes fourth to ensure the Lynx victory.

Below is a list of Lynx individual champions in five events from the 2021 SAA Championships:
