Becca Clarin Named to SCAC 30th Anniversary Women's Soccer Team

1/7/2021 11:37:00 AM

Prior to joining the Southern Athletic Association during the 2012-13 academic year, Rhodes College was a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The SCAC will be announcing 30th Anniversary teams in 19 sports throughout the 2020-21 academic year.

We'd like to congratulate Becca Clarin '10 on being named to the SCAC 30th Anniversary Women's Soccer Team! In addition to her time on the soccer pitch, Clarin, a Chicago native, was also a member of the women's basketball team.

Clarin was one of three goalkeepers named to the anniversary team which consists of 24 individuals. She was a two-time All-SCAC First Team selection (2008 and 2009) and remains the only goalkeeper in league history to earn All-America honors, achieving that milestone as a junior in 2008 when she was selected to the NSCAA Third Team after earning All-Regions honors. Clarin was the cornerstone of that '08 Rhodes squad which won the SCAC title with an 8-1 conference mark, led the league in goals-against-average and shutouts, and made the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She is also the only NSCAA All-American in Rhodes women's soccer history.

"Becca's athleticism and competitive drive helped take our program to another level," said former women's soccer head coach Bobby Lessentine. "Before her, our goalkeepers had separate fitness and training expectations; when she arrived she set new standards for the whole team. During our 2008 SCAC Championship season, Becca and our defense were the foundation upon which our team was built.  In the game at Centre that year, we were playing with 10 players due to an unfortunate sending off when Becca made two upper-90 saves that preserved our 1-0 win. These were the types of saves you only see on TV. Her third team All-American honor in 2008 means she was voted the third best goalkeeper in the country. All-America teams consisted of three or four forwards, midfielders, and defenders, but there is only one goalkeeper per team."

Former head women's basketball coach Matt Dean also had this to say about Clarin, "Becca was one of the toughest kids I ever coached. From a basketball standpoint, Becca was one of our best three-point shooters and competed defensively on every possession. A great teammate who on numerous occasions won us games with clutch shots in the last minute of play. It was my privilege to be able to coach Becca."

Rhodes women's soccer went 44-20-11 during Clarin's time with the Lynx as she compiled 324 saves and a 1.00 goals-against-average across 73 games. Rhodes was ranked in the top-25 nationally her first three seasons and were ranked No. 10 in 2008.

Lynx fans can look forward to more 30th Anniversary Team announcements in the coming months for the remainder of fall sports as follows:
