Jackson, Miss. - The Rhodes College swimming and diving teams both defeated Millsaps College in their season-opening meet Friday night.
The Lynx men won 199-28 while the women defeated the Majors 213-27. The women also competed against NCAA DII University of West Florida, falling 199-63.
"After a long layoff, it was great to get out and race again," said head coach
Steve Webb. "It was a fun meet against a very good DII team in West Florida, and a much-improved Millsaps team. I was very happy with how the team swam overall, especially factoring in we have had less than 10 days of practice."
The men's 200 medley relay team, consisting of
Arthur Bishop,
Max Van Cauwelaert,
Adam Young, and
Wyatt Guthrie, all first-years, started the meet off with a victory.
Ryan Folk then won the 1000 free before
Evan Ziolkowski took first in the 200 free. Bishop placed first in the 100 and 200 backstrokes and 200 IM and Van Cauwelaert won both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
Will Guzman won the 200 fly and 500 free while also Ziolkowski won the 50 and 100 freestyles.
Arrington Moses edged teammate
Adam Young to win the 100 fly. Rhodes wrapped up the meet by winning the 200 free relay by six seconds. The relay consisted of Young, Ziolkowski, Guthrie, and Moses.
On the women's side, Emma Younce won her first collegiate 100 back before Lauren Cordes won the 500 free by about seven seconds. Cordes also placed second in the 200 free earlier in the afternoon.
"Our depth was on display today and both teams are much improved from last season," said Webb. "We have some very aggressive team goals for the season, and if we keep training like we have been, those goals are very realistic. We now turn our focus to our two-day invite against another very good DII team in Delta State next weekend."
