ORLANDO, Fla. - The Rhodes College men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on day two of their spring break trip, defeating Wheaton College 5-4 before bouncing back by sweeping through Northwestern (MN) by the score of 9-0.
The Lynx began the match by taking two out of three at doubles. After freshmen
P.J. Shaw and
Phil Lauture won 9-8 (1) at No. 3 doubles, the Lynx needed No. 2 doubles to come through to take the doubles point.
The team of sophomore
Sean Hogan and freshman
Andrew Morton erased a 2-7 deficit, winning seven straight sets to come-from-behind and take the match and the doubles point, 9-7.
In singles competition, freshman
Ritwik Chatterjee was victorious at No. 3 singles 6-3, def. while Hogan picked up a win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Shaw would clinch the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, giving the Lynx the thrilling 5-4 victory.
Later that night, the Lynx had no trouble with Northwestern (MN), rolling to a 9-0 win in the nightcap.
Rhodes started the night with a sweep at doubles as Shaw and Lauture were victorious as No. 2 doubles, 8-1, while seniors
Albert Vacheron and
Daniel Olivier won at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.
Junior
Wesley Tolsdorf and freshman
Garland Lampton completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Chatterjee was victorious at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2 while Shaw won No. 2, 6-1, 6-0, and Olivier won at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1. The Lynx completed the sweep as Tolsdorf won No. 4, 6-2, 6-0, Lampton won No. 5, 6-3, 6-1, and sophomore
Phillips Hutchison won No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.
Rhodes moves to 11-2 on the season and will close their spring break trip on Friday as they take on Judson at 8 AM.
