Lynx Women's Tennis Opens Up 2017 with Pair of Home Wins

The Rhodes College women's tennis teams won a pair of games on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Bethel 8-1 in the morning followed by a 7-2 victory over Spring Hill later in the afternoon.

The Lynx led the morning off with a pair of wins in doubles as sophomore Caroline Doherty and senior Anna Volkov as they defeated Marcela Donaleni and Elena Focsh by the score of 8-1 at No. 1 doubles followed by a win at No. 2 doubles from senior Morgan Wilkins and freshman Natalie Arnold, 8-1, over Rosselle Dorero and Shelby Kennedy. The Lynx made it a 3-0 sweep after the No. 3 doubles team won by default.

In singles competition, No. 2-5 were absolutely dominant, dropping only four games throughout the day. Volkov won at No. 2 singles, defeating Focsh 6-0, 6-1, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles as Arnold knocked off Dorero 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomore Sara Lynn Abbott was victorious over Kennedy by the score of 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles while freshman Madeleine McDonald was victorious at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, over Allison Smarsh as Rhodes cruised to the 8-1 victory.

Later that afternoon against the Badgers, the Lynx led things off in singles competition as Arnold defeated Kate Sotolongo 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Abbott picked up a win at No. 5 singles by the score of 6-1, 6-3 while McDonald was victorious at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Wilkins defeated Rebecca Pearlman in an exciting match at No. 3 singles 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 while Volkov played a thrilling match at No. 2 singles, defeating Madison Artigues 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9).

On the doubles side, Wilkins and Arnold picked up an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles while Abbott and McDonald won at No. 3 doubles by the score of 8-1 as the Lynx closed the match at 7-2.

Rhodes starts the season at 2-0 and will return to the courts tomorrow morning as they take on the Ozarks at Dunavant Tennis Complex at 9 AM.
