ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Rhodes College women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins this weekend in St. Louis as they defeated Fontbonne, 9-0, and followed that up with a win over Webster, 7-2.
Against the Griffins on Thursday night, the Lynx did not drop a single game in a dominant performance. Rhodes earned one win in doubles by defaults, but got a win at No. 1 doubles from junior
Anna Volkov and freshman
Caroline Doherty, 8-0, as well as an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles from junior
Morgan Wilkins and freshman
Sara Lynn Abbott.
In singles action, every single match was won 6-0, 6-0 with Doherty winning at No. 1, Volkov taking No. 2, Wilkins winning No. 3, and Abbott dominating at No. 4. Senior
Annie Thomas would earn the sweep at No. 5 singles while Rhodes earned a default win at No. 6.
On Friday, the Lynx took a 2-1 lead in doubles competition as the No. 1 team of Doherty and Volkov evened the scored with an 8-4 win. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Wilkins and Abbott held off three match points at 5-7 and came from behind, taking four straight sets to win 9-7 and swing all the momentum in favor of the Lynx.
Volkov and Wilkins were dominant at No. 2 and No. 3 singles as Volkov won her match, 6-1, 6-0, while Wilkins was victorious, 6-0, 6-1. Thomas would clinch the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
Freshman
Jessie Amaro won at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-4, while Doherty held her own at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win as Rhodes was victorious, 7-2.
The Lynx would fall to Washington University (Mo.) later on Saturday, 9-0.
Rhodes moves to 6-7 on the year and will enjoy the rest of the weekend off for Easter. The Lynx will return home to the Dunavant Tennis Complex as they move back into conference play with a doublheader against Centre and Sewanee beginning at 9 AM.
