MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's tennis team earned a 9-0 win on Saturday afternoon over the Bethel University Wildcats. For the Lynx, it was their first win of the 2016 season.
After earning a win in No. 3 doubles due to forfeit, the No. 1 doubles team of junior
Anna Volkov and freshman
Caroline Doherty did not drop a game to Tori West and Roselle Dorero, winning 8-0. The No. 2 doubles team of junior
Morgan Wilkins and freshman
Sara Lynn Abbott was not far behind, cruising past the team of Shelby Kennedy and Christina Shands, 8-1, and earning the sweep in double competition.
After a forfeit at No. 6 single gave Rhodes a 4-0 lead, freshman
Jessie Amaro clinched the match for the Lynx as she defeated Allison Smarsh at No. 5 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
However, the Lynx were not done there. Wilkins defeated Kennedy in No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Volkov cruised past Dorero, 6-0, 6-1. Abbott made it 8-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Shands at No. 4 singles while Doherty clinched the sweep with a 6-0, 6-4 win over West at No. 1 singles. Doherty had initially dropped two match points, but fought back to clinch the match in straight sets with a beautiful return winner.
Rhodes begins the season 1-0 and will return home in two weeks on February 21st as they welcome in the Rust College Bearcats. First serve is currently set for 2 PM.
