CONWAY, Ark. - The Rhodes College women's tennis moved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in Southern Athletic Association play with a dominating 9-0 win over the Hendrix Warriors on Saturday afternoon.
Rhodes got things rolling in doubles competition as the No. 3 team of senior Annie Thomas and freshman Jessie Amaro defeated Any Jivan and Sarah Nieman, 8-3. Freshman Caroline Doherty and junior Anna Volkov clinched the doubles point for Rhodes at No. 1 with an 8-3 win over Julia Lefler and Lauren Mahaney.
The Lynx looked to sweep, but faced some adversity at No. 2 doubles as the team of junior Morgan Wilkins and freshman Sara Lynn Abbott found themselves down 4-0. The duo responded, winning the next eight games to storm back and give Rhodes the key sweep, 8-4. Rhodes had a commanding 3-0 lead going into singles competition.
In singles, Wilkins put Rhodes up, 4-0, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mahaney. Volkov would clinch the match, but had to battle back, as she was initially down 2-4 in the first set and went on to win nine straight games. Volkov eventually defeated Pratheepa Ravikumar at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Rhodes would go on to sweep the match as Doherty defeated Lefler, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles while Abbott knocked off Laela Zaidi, 6-1, 6-4. Amaro and Thomas closed the match up at No. 5 and No. 6 singles with Amaro winning 6-1, 6-0 and Thomas winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Lynx will return to Memphis tonight and prepare to hit the court again tomorrow morning as they welcome in Christian Brothers at 10 AM.
