MEMPHIS -Â The Lynx just continue to roll.
No matter the time, the place, the situation or circumstance, there seems to be a common theme among the Rhodes College field hockey team.
They win.
On Friday afternoon, the Lynx made it eight straight wins and moved to 11-1 in 2016 as they scored two second half goals to defeat the Bridgewater Eagles, 2-0, at Mason Field in non-conference action.
It marked one of the most complete performances from Rhodes in 2016 as they outmatched a tough Eagle team throughout the afternoon. For the Eagles, it is only their second time being shut out this season with the other shutout coming to Lynchburg earlier this year.
The Lynx out shot the Eagles 9-5 despite Bridgewater owning a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Rhodes two shots on goal were the two shots that ended up mattering the most. Rhodes held a slim 6-5 advantage in penalty corners.
In an exciting first half, neither team could find a goal. Bridgewater controlled possession throughout the first 10 minutes, getting three shots off, but junior
Laura Eckelkamp would come away with the save to stop any early momentum.
The next 25 minutes would lie in favor of Rhodes, as they began to create opportunities and pressure the Eagle defense. Despite the pressure, the game remained a scoreless tie at the break.
The Lynx looked strong in the second half in search of their first goal of the game. Around 12 minutes into the second half, Rhodes would use a beautiful counter attack in which junior
Maddie Smith found fellow sophomore
Lizzie Wood, who deked the goalkeeper and scored to make it 1-0.
Bridgewater immediately looked to answer, but tremendous defense all afternoon from the likes of sophomore
Abby Rockefeller, freshman
Daryl Perry, and senior
Erin Best kept the Lynx ahead by one.
Rhodes put the game away for good with less than five remaining as Smith sent a penalty corner to sophomore
Jillian Christensen, who ripped a shot from the top of the scoring area to close the match at 2-0.
Smith and the sophomore Christensen and Wood were outstanding all game long as Smith led the team with two assists. Senior
Kennedy Brislin put together a terrific all-around game while seniors
Christina DiFelice and
Mackenzie Busby also played well. Eckelkamp finished with five saves in the shutout win.
The Lynx will hit the road to wrap up SAA play next weekend as they look to clinch the SAA Championship out right and host the tournament out right at Mason Field. They will head to Ferrum, Va. next Saturday as they take on Ferrum at 6 PM ET.
