Lynx Claim SAA Regular Season Title with Blowout of Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. - The Rhodes College field hockey team claimed the 2016 Southern Athletic Association Regular Season Championship, the No. 1 seed at the SAA Championship, and the ability to host the conference title as they capped an undefeated conference season with a 7-0 win over Ferrum.

Rhodes moves to 12-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the SAA. They extend their winning streak to nine games.

The Lynx completely dominated their opponents, out shooting the Panthers 29-1 including a 16-0 advantage in shots on target. Rhodes also held a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners on the evening.

Rhodes got a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes as sophomore Lizzie Wood struck first followed by career-goal leading Christina DiFelice to move ahead by two goals. The Lynx picked up another goal with less than four minutes to go in the half as senior Erin Best scored.

In the second half, the Lynx poured it on en rout to the dominant win. Wood and DiFelice picked up their second goals of the game while seniors Mackenzie Busby and Grace Whelan each scored to make it a 7-0 final.

DiFelice added an assist to her impressive day while senior Kennedy Brislin along with freshmen Cami Sullivan, Hailey Mules, and Lydia Slyter all had assists on the evening.

The Rhodes defense, led by the likes of sophomore Abby Rockefeller, and freshman Daryl Perry, were perfect on the day as they gave the Panthers no chance on their attack. Junior Laura Eckelkamp earned the shut out, her fifth of the season.

For Rhodes, it is their third straight SAA Regular Season Title and their fourth overall in five years in the SAA. The Lynx have won either the regular season, the conference tournament title, or both 13 times since 2001.

The Lynx will go back into non-conference play tomorrow as they head to Charlottesville, Va. for a neutral site matchup against Christopher Newport, scheduled for a 3 PM start time.
