Lynx Nine Game Winning Streak Snapped by Tough Christopher Newport

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Rhodes College field hockey team saw their nine game winning streak snapped by a tough Christopher Newport team on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, falling 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Rhodes still sits with an impressive 12-2 record including a perfect 5-0 record in the SAA.

The two teams played a pretty even match despite the two goal deficit. They were even in shots at 11 a piece with Rhodes holding a slight 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Rhodes also had seven penalty corners on the afternoon to the Captains four.

The Lynx jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half on a goal from sophomore Lauren Travis from junior Maddie Smith, but Christopher Newport responded with about seven minutes remaining in the half as Rachael Allshouse scored to even the game at one going into halftime.

The Captains used the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend their lead to two as Carol Thompson scored back-to-back goals in about two minutes to put CNU in control of the match.

Rhodes, who had eight shots in the first half, were stifled by the Captains defense in the second as they were only able to get three shots off. Rhodes was able to get two corners, but to no avail as they fell for the first time since September 11th.

Senior Christina DiFelice led the offensive attack with three shots while senior Kennedy Brislin and Travis added two shots a piece. Junior Laura Eckelkamp picked up three saves in goal on the day.

Rhodes will take a week off and then close out the regular season on October 29th as they will have Senior Day in a non-conference matchup against Hendrix. Game time is scheduled for 1 PM and fans are encouraged to arrive early as the Lynx will honor seven seniors before the match.
