Rhodes tops Oglethorpe, 6-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes women's tennis team snuck out a win on Friday over Southern Athletic Association completion, Oglethorpe University, 6-3

The Lynx started out with doubles play that was highlighted by Morgan Wilkins and Elyse Smith cruising to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Playing No. 3 doubles Prianka Bose and Natalie Vacheron played well for their first match together and lost 8-4.
 
Amelia McIsaac and Anna Volkov were in a battle at the No. 1 doubles position with both teams holding serve until they got to 6-6. At 6-6 the Lynx dropped their first service game and found themselves down 7-6. They were able to hold off two match points including an epic point where Volkov came up with six awesome backhands in a row. On the third match point Oglethorpe converted and took a 2-1 lead going into the singles matches.
 
In singles Wilkins continued her hot streak and rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles to level the match at 2-2. Everyone knew the match would be close as McIsaac and Volkov dropped their first sets 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles respectively, and Smith and Vacheron won their first sets 6-4 and 6-2 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively.
 
Vacheron was able to secure the next point for the Lynx after fighting off set point in her second set tiebreaker before winning 9-7. On courts No. 1 and No. 2 McIsaac and Volkov were storming back as both won their second sets to force a third set. McIsaac ran out of steam at the No. 1 position and lost her third set 6-2 which leveled the match at 3-3 with three courts still playing.
 
On those three courts Volkov and Smith were in third sets at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions and Bose was down 5-2 in her first set. Smith was able to refocus in her third set and come out on top with a 6-2 victory to put the Lynx up 4-3.
 
The match was clinched for the Lynx when Bose stormed back winning 10 games in a row for a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. Volkov added the icing on the cake winning her third set 7-5 to give the Lynx a 6-3 victory.
 
The women's tennis team returns to action tomorrow against conference foe Berry who have opened up conference play with a perfect 3-0 record.
