SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Rhodes softball team finished off the regular season on a high note, completing the sweep of Southern Athletic Association foes Sewanee on Saturday.
The Lynx improve to 15-19-1 on the year and 12-9-1 in league play while the Tigers fall to 0-28 and 0-23 in conference action.
Rhodes took the first contest in decisive fashion, shutting out the Tigers 13-0.
Caroline Reilly got things started for the Lynx with a solo homerun shot in the second inning. Rhodes added two more runs in that frame. A huge 10 run third inning bolstered the Lynx, featuring RBI singles from
Kirsten Samuels and
Allison Long, a double from
Makenzie Martin and a three-run homer from Reilly. Rhodes defense held strong, and shutout Sewanee in five innings.
Rhodes rallied for 16 hits, with Reilly and Samuels leading the way, going 3-for-3 from the plate.
Reilly also got it done on the rubber for the Lynx, where she pitched the complete five innings, with five strikeouts.
In the second contest, head coach
Luke Wagner's squad continued its dominance, bypassing the Tigers 9-1.
Rhodes added a single run in the first inning, with three more runs in the third frame, with a
Rachel Pewitt scoring single and a
Maggie Mitchell single that scored two. Rhodes kept the steady scoring coming with another two runs in the fourth inning.
Christine Hume hit a double to score Long, with Samuels using savvy base running to add the Lynx sixth run.
Rhodes added three more runs in the fifth inning, with the Tigers sneaking in a score in the bottom of the inning for a final score of 9-1.
The Lynx bats picked up 15 hits in the second contest, with
Erin Parker and Martin each going 3-for-4 from the dish to lead the Lynx.
Forrest Skelton threw all five innings for the Lynx, fanning seven batters and scattering six hits.
Rhodes will look forward to the Southern Athletic Association conference tournament held April 24-26.
