MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes softball team picked up the series sweep on Wednesday of Hendrix College.
The Lynx improve to 5-15-1 on the season, and 4-5-1 in Southern Athletic Association play, while the Warriors fall to 5-12 on the year and 2-8 in league action.
In the first contest, the Lynx took the game 10-7. Rhodes got on the board early, scoring two runs in the second inning. In a big fourth frame, the Lynx tacked on four more runs.
Hendrix worked into the scoring column in the fifth inning, adding three runs, but the Lynx topped it in the bottom of the inning, adding another four runs, with a
Caroline Sutton single to center that scored three to pull ahead 10-3.
The Lynx were able to hold off Hendrix, who added two runs in the sixth and seventh frames for the 10-7 final.
Rhodes tallied 12 hits in the contest, with
Maggie Mitchell leading the way, going 3-for-3 at the plate.
Caroline Reilly got the start, and the win in the circle for the Lynx, where she threw five complete innings with two strikeouts.
Allison Long came in to close, throwing two full innings.
In the second match up, the Lynx hit crew came to play, and Rhodes secured an 8-6 win.
Head coach
Luke Wagner's squad posted three runs in the second, with a Martin double to get things started, scoring
Kirsten Samuels.
Caroline Sutton knocked a single to left center on the next at bat, trading places with Martin. A
Christine Hume single scored Sutton, for the early 3-0 lead.
A three-run homer in the third inning for Hendrix knotted the contest at 3-3. The tie was short lived, when the Lynx added two runs in the bottom of the frame when Martin doubled to left field, sending home Samuels and
Rachel Pewitt. The Lynx tacked on two more runs in the fourth to take the 7-3 lead.
The Warriors added three runs in the fifth inning to pull within two runs at 7-6. But the Lynx had an answer, and a Reilly pinch hit double scored Sutton for the final count of 8-6.
In the outing, the Lynx notched 16 hits, with Samuels and Martin leading the way with three hits apiece, including three RBIs for Martin.
Forrest Skelton got the start, and the win for the Lynx with four full innings pitched. While in the circle, the senior threw two strikeouts.
Allison Long came in to finish the contest, picking up one strikeout and the save.
Rhodes will be back in action on March 28 in a four-game series in Jackson, Miss. against Millsaps College.
