Rhodes drops season openers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes softball team opened its 2015 campaign on Saturday, taking on DePauw University and Maryville College.

In the Lynx first contest, Rhodes lost a close match up against the Tigers, 4-3.

Rhodes got on the board first, scoring a run in the first inning when Erin Parker found her way home on a passed ball to take the early 1-0 lead. The Tigers posted their first run in the next frame, when a Taylor Golden sacrifice scored Sammi Bell, and knotted the game up 1-1.

The Lynx worked their way back on top, after Makenzie Martin notched a sac fly, sending home Maggie Mitchell to take a 2-1 lead. Again, the Tigers answered in the next inning, tacking on one run to make the count 2-2.

Rhodes continued its pattern, adding one run in the bottom of the third, when Christine Hume hit a bomb over the left-center fence. The Tigers, answered with a home run of their own, when Bell knocked one out to make the count 3-3.

The Lynx struggled to get the offense going, and after a Tiger run in the fifth put DePauw up 4-3, the Lynx couldn't spark a rally and fell to the same score.

In the contest, Rhodes notched three hits with two RBIs. The Tigers posted six hits.

Forrest Skelton threw the complete game for the Lynx, with seven innings pitched. In the circle, the senior threw five strike outs, while only walking one in the loss.

In the Lynx second contest of the day, head coach Luke Wagner's squad faced off against Maryville College, falling 8-1.

Rhodes lone score came when Rachel Pewitt powered a double to left field, sending Hume home.

The contest ended after five innings due to lack of visibility. The Lynx tallied two hits in the contest, with the Scots recording 12.

Caroline Reilly went the distance in the circle, throwing all five innings, where she struck out one.

Rhodes will be back in the diamond on Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. when they host DePauw College.
