Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Lynx defeated the Lyon College Scots in dramatic fashion Saturday, coming back from the 0-2 hole to win the fifth set 15-11, taking the match.
The win improves Rhodes record to 3-2 on the year while the Scots fall to 0-5 to start their season.
The Lynx started off slowly allowing the Scots to take the first two set to the scores of 25-23 25-23. After batting back and fourth for most the third set, the Lynx eventually gained the advantage and avoided the sweep winning the set 25-21.
With their backs still against the wall the Lynx needed to carry their momentum over into the fourth set. Another intense, close set followed without either team taking control until the Lynx gained a 23-20 advantage. However, Lyon battled back and scored four straight points to take a 24-20 lead and put the Lynx on the brink of defeat. The Lynx fought off three match points with a kill by senior
Mollie Newbern and an attacking error by the Scots gave the Lynx a 28-27 lead. Freshman outside hitter
Elasha Williams put away the next ball to take the set for the Lynx 29-27.
The match then came down to one final set to 15 to decide the victor. The fifth set was close until a kill by Newbern tied the game at 7-7, and the Lynx never looked back. Scoring five straight points, the Lynx took at 12-7 lead and finished off the set to a score of 15-11, completing their impressive comeback.
The Lynx were paced offensively by Williams who turned in a career high 20 kills at a .354 attack clip, while recording a double-double by adding 10 digs. Newbern chipped in nine kills while junior
Lauren Johnson added seven. Junior libero
Tasha Heller tallied an impressive 32 digs, while senior defensive specialist
Maraia Tremarelli added another 11 digs. Junior setter
Allison Limmer dished out 43 assists and a service ace in the match.
The Lynx will play Centenary College in their second match of the Rhodes Invitational at 3 pm on Sept. 6 in the Mallory Gymnasium.
