BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The women's team experienced a tough loss Sunday facing the Birmingham Southern College Panthers at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex.
Many of the matches were close, but one or two points made the difference and significantly changed the complexion of the match transitioning from doubles into singles.
In doubles competition,
Elyse Smith and
Morgan Wilkins lost a heartbreaking 9-7 decision at second doubles. On court one,
Anna Volkov and
Amelia McIsaac fought to a tiebreaker to decide the final doubles point, but lost 8-6 to seal the sweep for the Panthers going into singles competition.
In similar fashion, the matches during singles play were close, but the Panthers swept all of the courts. McIsaac had a tough time rebounding from her close doubles loss, dropping her first set in singles 6-0, but collected herself and forced a third set by winning the second 6-3. Unfortunately she would not prevail, falling 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 in the final.
Kristal Skrmetta also forced a third set when she won the opener and lost the second. At that point the match had been decided and both coaches agreed to play a 10-point match tiebreaker to decide any remaining matches. Skrmetta would lose the tiebreaker 10-6.
Anna Volkov played a close first set at third singles, but struggled to regain her composure as the last match on in a decided dual between the two teams and lost 7-5, 6-1.
Rhodes will look to rebound against SAA opponent Centre this Saturday, April 5 at 5 p.m. The Lynx will play host to this weekend's slate of matches at the Dunavant Tennis Center.
