DANVILLE, Ky. - The Rhodes field hockey team rolled to the Southern Athletic Association Conference Tournament Championships game with a 7-1 rout of Sewanee on Saturday.
Rhodes will face off against Centre College, who defeated Hendrix College 1-0 to advance to the Championship contest. Rhodes keeps the season rolling with a 14-3 overall record, while the Tigers finish 2014 with an 8-8 mark.
Rhodes offense was relentless, with
Shauni Cowan netting the first Lynx goal in the 17th minute off a
Erin Best pass, to give Rhodes a 1-0 advantage. Just a minute later, Best found the back of the cage, assisted by Cowan, to give Rhodes a 2-0 lead.
In the 26th minute, Best netted her second goal, giving Rhodes a 3-0 edge. The Lynx would hold on to that lead through the halftime break.
In the second half, the Rhodes offense picked up right where it left off, as four minutes into the period
Christina DiFelice netted a goal after a
Julie Hertzman set up pass, for a 4-0 Lynx lead.
Mary Rose Hazel worked a shot into the cage at the 44 minute mark, assisted by
Kate Taylor on the play, pushing the Lynx lead to five.
Hazel fought to post a second goal in the 51st minute, converting a
Jordan Kugler pass, padding to the Lynx lead.
Alex Friedman netted a goal just five minutes later of another Best set up, posting Rhodes final score, giving the Lynx a 7-0 lead.
Sewanee's Katie Wilson spoiled the Lynx shutout in the 66th minute when she snuck a goal in past the Lynx net minder. The Rhodes defense held on to take the 7-1 win and advance to the championship round of the SAA tournament.
Rhodes out matched their counterparts in the shots column, firing 23 to the Tigers 11. Rhodes was also awarded more penalty corner opportunities by a count of 15-10.
Laura Eckelkamp got the start for the Lynx, grabbing five saves while in goal.
Rhodes will face off against host Centre College on Sunday, Nov. 9 in the SAA Conference Tournament Championship show down at 11 a.m. The Lynx fell to Centre at home in a tight contest, 1-0, while beating the Colonels in Danville, 3-2 to clinch a share of the SAA Regular Season Title.
