MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes field hockey team put on a clinic on Sunday, downing Transylvania University 7-1 in Southern Athletic Association play.
The Lynx improve to 7-2 on the year and 3-1 in league play, while the Pioneers fall to 1-9 on the season and 0-5 in SAA play.
Rhodes opened scoring early, when
Julie Hertzman netted an unassisted goal in the opening three minutes. Just two minutes later,
Shauni Cowan put away a
Grace Whelan pass to make the count 2-0. The Lynx scored two more goals before the end of the half, when
Erin Best converted a
Christina DiFelice pass at the 26 minute mark, followed by a
Lauren Travis goal in the 30th minute after a Best assist. The Lynx took a 4-0 lead into the half time break.
In the second period, the Lynx continued their scoring fest, with
Mary Rose Hazel netting a score in the 50th minute.
Georgie Wilkins found the back of the cage unassisted five minutes later, to push Rhodes ahead 6-0. DeFielice and Best made another combo attack for the last Rhodes goal, when DiFelice scored at the 61st minute mark, to push ahead 7-0.
Transy pushed one goal through in the 64th minute when Sara Clark snuck a shot past the Rhodes net minder.
Rhodes took 25 shots on the day to the Pioneers four, The Lynx also took more penalty corners by a count of 17-4.
Two Rhodes keepers saw minutes in goal with
Laura Eckelkamp getting the start and 35 minutes in the cage.
Caroline Fowler picked up the remaining 35 minutes, where she grabbed two saves.
Rhodes will be back on the field on Oct. 10 against Sewanee at 4 p.m.
