MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes field hockey team downed Sewanee on Friday in Southern Athletic Association play, 5-1
The Lynx improve to 8-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play, while the Tigers move to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the SAA.
The first half was a close stalemate, with neither team finding the back of the cage in the opening 35 minutes.
Sewanee got the scoring started in the second half, when Allegra Massey-Elim connected on a cross that was deflected by the Rhodes defense.
Rhodes wouldn't be kept quiet for long, when just nine minutes later, the Lynx knotted the score up at 1-1 when
Julie Hertzman found the back of the cage off an
Evy Royther pass. The Lynx got the go ahead goal just two minutes later in the 47th minute when
Maddie Smith scored off another Royther set up.
In the 56th minute,
Shauni Cowan added an insurance goal off an
Erin Best assist to put the Lynx ahead 3-1.
Mary Rose Hazel then connected unassisted in the 63rd minute to give the Lynx the 4-1 advantage. Cowan scored the final Rhodes goal off a Hazel pass to give the Lynx the 5-1 lead, and victory.
Erin Bailey was in the net for all 70 minutes of play for the Lynx where she picked up two saves.
Rhodes outshot their opponents by a count of 21-6 and were awarded more penalty corners by a tally of 19-3.
Rhodes will be back in action on Oct. 15 when the Lynx host Roanoke College at 4 p.m.
