MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rhodes soccer defeated LeTourneau University in a 3-1 win on Saturday in the first round of the Parents Weekend Tournament.
The win takes the Lynx to 3-4 on the year, while the Jackets fell to 1-5-1.
Despite controlling most of the possession in the first half, Rhodes was unable to find the back of the net. Jason Crutcher nearly scored the opener, but celebrations were cut short when his goal was called offside. LeTourneau also had a chance to take the lead with Patrick Tchekane, whose powerful shot forced a save from goalkeeper Riley Sheen. The teams took the 0-0 spilt into the halftime break.
After the restart of the second half, Rhodes was the more threatening team. Three minutes into the second half, Eric Ly's scorching shot from Crutcher's pass gave Rhodes the lead. Ly was involved again five minutes later when his pass was met by Gabe Laurence, who finished coolly into the bottom left corner of the goal. Crutcher recorded another assist after his cross was finished by Evan Wladis with 19 minutes left in the half.
With five minutes left on the clock, LeTourneau pulled a goal back when Patrick Tchekane finished unassisted, making the final score 3-1.
"I think we had a solid team performance," said head coach Andy Marcinko. "We were disappointed not to keep a clean sheet and a shutout, but are happy to come away with the win."
Sophomore goalkeeper Riley Sheen played all 90 minutes in goal, making five saves.
Rhodes led the charge in the shots column taking 17 shots to the Yellow Jackets 12. The Lynx were also awarded more corner kicks by a tally of 3-1.
The Lynx are back in action tomorrow, Sept. 22, against the University of the Ozarks at 4 p.m.
