BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rhodes men's soccer fell to Birmingham Southern by a score of 3-0 in the first conference game of the season on the campus of Birmingham Southern on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The loss brings the Lynx to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Panthers' win brought their record up to 7-3-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference.
Â
The first half was a physical, end-to-end battle, but Birmingham Southern broke the deadlock just under 15 minutes left in the first half with a strike from Conner Quiggle. Quiggle was involved again one minute later when he slipped a through ball to Tobias Winter, whose shot found the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
Â
"I thought we certainly started off well in the first half," head coach Andy Marcinko said. "Unfortunately, we gave up a goal and hung our heads, and give Birmingham Southern credit for taking advantage."
Â
After the break, the two teams fought hard to maintain possession. The Lynx conceded again 13 minutes into the second half, when Winter recorded his second goal of the game with a curling shot that snuck into the upper right corner of the goal.
Â
"I thought we played with much more effort and intensity in the second half and were unfortunate not to come up with a goal," Marcinko said.
Â
Riley Sheen played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lynx, making 5 saves. Junior forward Jason Crutcher led Rhodes with three shots on the day, with two on frame.
Â
The Lynx are back in action against Christian Brothers University on Monday, Oct. 7th in Memphis at 7 p.m.
