Sewanee, TN - The Rhodes College Football team earned a thrilling victory over its biggest rival, Sewanee: The University of the South, on Saturday as the final outcome of the game, had to be decided on the final play in the 14-10 victory for the Lynx. Serving as the longest consecutively played college football game south of the Mason-Dixie Line, the Lynx brought back home the coveted Orgill Trophy, while ensuring Rhodes its first guaranteed winning season since 2007.
Offensively the Lynx were led by a punishing ground attack, which was led by Junior Running Back
Dane Wilson, who rushed the ball 29 times for 205 yards. Senior Quarterback
Tyler Perkins added another 21 yards on the ground and made the game winning touchdown pass to Senior
Jack Lartigue with 29 second left to play.
Defensively the Lynx were led by Sophomore Defensive Back
Justin Toliver who had 12 tackles and an interception on the day. Other solid defensive efforts were put forth by the entire Linebacker corp as Freshman
Spencer Smith had 7 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 sack, and 2.5 tackles for loss, Freshman
Michael Shield had 6 tackles, and 0.5 tackles for loss, and finally Junior
Walker McWherter had 6 tackles and 1 tackle for loss.
Head Coach
Dan Gritti had this to say about the win: "This was a great win. We faced a lot of adversity during the game, but still prevailed. I couldn't be more proud of the way our team played today. It was a total team effort."
The Lynx will be on their bye week for the weekend of November 3rd, and will return for action with the season finale against Centre College at home on Saturday November 10th. Kickoff is slated for a 1:00 PM CST start.
