Playing in the final home games of their careers, the Class of 2011 took it upon themselves to lead the Lynx to a doubleheader sweep of Centre this afternoon, leading the Lynx to a pair of 5-inning victories by scores of 13-0 and 18-5.
Cindy Bitters,
Olivia Ryan,
Sara Bowen and
Allison Conn combined to account for 17 runs, 15 hits, 14 RBI and belted 3 home runs during Sunday's games, and Bowen and Bitters each picked up a win in the circle.
The Lynx put game 1 away early, sending 14 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the 1st inning, racking up 9 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, to go along with 2 Colonel errors. Rhodes added 2 more in the third when
Kelli Zomer and Conn drilled back to back long balls, and 2 more in the 4th on a 2-run single from Bowen.
Bowen was dominant in the circle, earning her 12th win and tossing her 5th shutout of the season. The Senior gave up just 2 hits and struck out 4 Colonels in 5 innings of work. With the win, Bowen tied the Rhodes record for career wins with 39, and for the third straight season, has tied the single season record with 12 wins. Bowen and Zomer were both 4 for 4 to lead the offense, while Conn reached base 3 times and scored 3 runs.
The second game of the day provided much of the same for the Lynx, taking advantage of 6 Colonel errors in the first two innings to score 4 runs in each inning on just 5 total hits. Centre scored 2 runs in their half of the second, but the Lynx still held a commanding 8-2 lead after 2 innings.
The Colonels took advantage of 2 walks and hit batter, then got a couple of clutch 2-out hits off Bitters in the 4th to cut the Lynx lead to 8-5, but
Chelsea Peters came out of the bullpen to end the Colonel rally with a groundout.
Leading 8-5, the Lynx exploded for 10 runs in the bottom half of the 4th, pounding out 7 hits and taking advantage of 3 walks, capped off by back to back home runs by Bowen and Ryan, giving the Lynx an 18-5 lead. Peters retired the Colonels in the top of the 5th, earning the save and securing the win for the Lynx, as well as completing the 4-game sweep of the Colonels.
Bitters earned the win, improving to 3-2 on the season, while Ryan went 4 for 4 with 3 RBI and Bowen was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI to lead the offense.
Rhodes improves to 19-11 on the season and 6-6 in the SCAC. The Lynx will travel to Georgia this weekend, taking on Berry College on Friday, #2 Emory University on Saturday and Wesleyan on Sunday.
