The Rhodes College baseball team split this afternoon's conference double header with visiting Centre College. Rhodes lost the first game 9-5 and won the second 12-11 in 10 innings. Senior 1B Brent Lindsey had a walk-off base hit to centerfield scoring Nolan Bielinski from second to win the game. Senior RHP Hunter Chandler picked up his third victory of the season, working 5.1 innings out of the bullpen.
In the first game, the Lynx took an early 1-0 lead after one, and answered a 3 run top of the 4th by Centre with 4 runs of their own to take a 5-3 lead after 4. Centre plated 5 more in the top of the 5th and added 1 more in the 7th, as the Lynx bats were held silent for the rest of the game to make a 9-5 final. Junior RHP Austin Carden went the first 4.2 innings for Lynx, allowing 6 hits, 8 runs, 3 earned, 2 walks, and struck out 2. Junior RHP Remick Smothers relieved Carden with 2 outs in the 5th to get out of the jam. On the day, Smothers worked 1 inning, allowed 1 hit, and no runs. Freshman LHP Max Halasz entered the game with 2 outs in the top of the 6th and needed only 2 pitches to end the inning. Halasz worked 2/3 of an inning allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit. Sophomore RHP James Todd relieved Halasz with 1 out in the top of the 7th. Todd allowed no runs on 1 walk. The Lynx offense was led by senior RF Andy Meier who was 2-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Senior LF Matt Gilbert was 2-4 with a run scored. Senior 1B Brent Lindsey was 1-2 with an RBI, run scored, and walked once. Sophomore Matt Burnick was 1-3 with a double, 2 RBIs, and a run scored. Freshman 2B Stewart Martens was 1-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Junior CF Travis Perkins was 1-3 with an RBI.
In the second game, Rhodes overcame an early 2-0 Centre lead with 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th. Centre responded with 8 in the top of the 5th, to make it 10-6. Rhodes then cut the lead in half with 2 in the bottom of the 5th, and tied the game at 10 with 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th. Centre took the lead again with a single run in the top of the 7th. Rhodes tied the game at 11 with 2 out double by Matt Gilbert. Brent Lindsey drove in the winning run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th for a 12-11 Lynx victory. Sophomore RHP Tony Pikos worked the first 4.1 innings for the Lynx allowing 7 hits, 7 runs, and 3 walks. Senior RHP Taylor Babich went 1/3 of an inning allowing 2 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned runs, and walked 1. Senior RHP Hunter Chandler went the next 5.1 innings en route to his 3rd victory of the season. Chandler allowed 3 hits, 1 unearned run, 2 walks, and struck out 8. The Lynx offense was led by senior RF Andy Meier who was 2-4 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored, a walk, got hit by a pitch, and stole a base. Senior LF Matt Gilbert was 2-4 with a double, 3 RBIs, walked once, got hit by a pitch, and stole a base. Sophomore SS Lynden Pindling was 2-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, and stole a base. Senior 1B Brent Lindsey was 2-5 with an RBI, 2 runs scored, walked once, and stole a base. Sophomore DH Matt Burnick was 2-6 with a double and 2 RBIs. Freshman Stewart Martens was 2-5 with a run scored and stole a base.
Rhodes and Centre will finish out their conference series tomorrow with first pitch at 12:00.
