Behind a 1-hit, 15 strikeout performance from senior
Sara Bowen and a balanced offensive attack, the Rhodes softball team opened the 2011 season in impressive fashion, defeating #19 Transyvlania 7-0. Six different Lynx had RBI in the game to lead a 9-hit attack, led by junior
Kelli Zomer, whose 2-out single in the second extended the Rhodes lead to 3-0. Rhodes will play Huntongdon College at 3:00pm this afternoon.
Rhodes got on the board in the first inning, when
Allison Conn doubled down the left field line, then came around to score on a 2-out double from freshman Courtney Williams. The Lynx extended the lead to 3-0 in the second, after
Katie Stich and
Megan Matthews drew walks, and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. It was Zomer's turn to deliver the 2-out hit, lining a ball to right field to score both runs.
With 1-out in the 4th, Williams was hit by a pitch and
Olivia Ryan walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. WIth 2-outs, sophomore
Katie Stich ripped a single up the middle to score Williams and give the Lynx a 4-0 lead. Rhodes added 3 more runs in the 4th on 4 consecutive singles. Zomer singled and stole second with 1 out, and came around to score on a single by Conn, who advanced the second on the throw. She would come around to score on a single from Bowen to put runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out. A groundout by Ryan plated Conn to give the Lynx the 7-0 lead after 4 innings.
Bowen allowed just 2 baserunners all day, a walk to All-American Megan Mitchell in the 4th and a double by Alicia Winans in the 6th. Bowen, already the Lynx all-time strikeout leader, added 15 more to her total in picking up her first win of the season.
Zomer, Conn, and Williams each had a pair of hits for the Lynx to pace the offense. Rhodes returns to action at 3:00pm today against defending Great South Conference Champion Huntingdon College.
