Lynx faithful come out strong on Friday, December 2nd, as Rhodes defeated rival University of the South, 77 to 62. A 'Sea of Red' filled the stands and saw the Lynx use a second half run to get their first conference victory of the season. Rhodes was sparked off the bench from Sophomore Guard Mike Gallagher, who ended the night with 19 points and connected on all six of his three-point attempts. With the win, Rhodes climbs on top of the conference race tied with Centre College.
A back and forth game in the first half saw multiple lead changes and very little defense. Shots were falling from all parts of the court, as both teams shot over 50% for the half. The Lynx were able to connect on 7 of 11 three point field goals, but failed to take advantage of getting into the bonus with 11 minutes remaining in the half. Rhodes missed 3 front ends of the one-and-ones to keep the score closer. Rhodes took a five point lead at the half, 41 to 36.
Rhodes keep up the tempo and pace in the second half. The Lynx used their physical nature to wear down the Tigers and expand their advantage. A 4-point play by Mike Gallagher with 7:37 put the lead to 63 - 52, and there was no looking back. From that point, Rhodes went on a 18 to 5 run over a span of five minutes to push their lead to a game-high 20 points. The Lynx cruised to the finish and closed out Sewanee, 77 to 62. Along with Gallagher, Junior
Andrew Galow added 14 points.
With the win, the Lynx move to 4-2 on the young season and have a collision against conference favorite Centre on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. Prior to the game on Sunday, the Lynx will honor select faculty and staff from the Rhodes community that have influenced the players time at Rhodes College.
