Lynx Turn In Another After Halftime

Lynx Use 2nd Half Rally To Defeat Westminster Bluejays

11/18/2011 8:57:00 PM

After a balanced first half from both sides, the Rhodes Lynx came out of the locker room looking to open the season on a positive note.  On Friday November 18th, the Lynx used a 16 to 4 run over a span of five minutes to defeat the Westminster Bluejays 69 - 53.  Rhodes found a weakness in the Bluejay defense and exploited it collecting 46 points in the paint.  In a balanced attack, the Lynx totaled four players in double figures, led by Sophomore Johnny Dunavant with a game high 12 points.

Both teams came out a little sluggish to start the season.  A slow first half was marred with Lynx turnovers and the inability to find the open man under the basket.  Although a struggle, Rhodes pushed through with a solid defensive effort and went into the locker room tied at 27.

The Lynx came out of the second half with three straight turnovers, but then things turned around.  Rhodes took the lead for good with 13:54 remaining when Kory Kilpatrick made a great pass fake and knocked down an open three-point field goal - assisted by Freshman Kevin Chien.  The lead was then pushed to ten (50 - 40) with 9:22 on the clock on an offensive rebound putback by Sophomore Shane Watson.

Using a 16 to 4 run from 8:55 remaining to 3:30, Rhodes found big gaps in the Westminster defense and got out on the break for six fastbreak points.  The Lynx did not look back and notched their first victory of the year against the Westminster College Bluejays 69 to 53.  Rhodes held Westminster to 38.9% shooting for the game, including a dismal 23% from the three-point line.

Sophomore Johnny Dunavant led four Lynx in double figures with 12 points, going 5-12 from the field.  Junior Theo Hartwell added 11 points and 10 rebounds, six offensive, to notch the first double-double of the season for Rhodes basketball.  The big stage did not seem to effect  Freshmen guard Kevin Chien who had 11 points to go along with 5 assists, and Freshman Geoff Livsey who added 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting.

Rhodes starts the season 1-0, but has a short turnaround against the Greenville College Panthers (1-1) on Saturday November 19th at 3:00pm.
