On Sunday afternoon, Rhodes honored the four members of the class of 2010, and sent them off as winners by taking a pair of games from Sewanee by scores of 17-0 and 9-0, completing the 4-game series sweep of the Tigers. Rebekah Moore, Jennifer Whatley, Armanda Venezia and Karli Alvino will graduate with the most wins of any class in Rhodes Softball history, with 91 total wins heading into next weekend's SCAC Championships. Rhodes finishes the regular season 27-13, breaking the school record for regular season wins, which was set last year with 26 regular season wins.
Rhodes jumped on the board first in game 1, as Kelli Zomer led off the game with a single, and advanced to third on an error by the Sewanee left fielder. Zomer would come around to score on an RBI single from Allison Conn to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead after 1 inning.
The Lynx collected 7 runs on 6 hits in the bottom half of the second, capped off by a grand slam from Sara Bowen, her 9th home run of the season, tying Rhodes' single season record currently held by Moore. Rhodes added a pair of RBI singles from Zomer and Megan Matthews in the third and another run when Bowen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to take an 11-0 lead after 3 innings.
Rhodes rounded out its scoring with a 6-run 4th inning, highlighted by 2-run doubles by Angie Rice and Cindy Bitters to finish with a 17-0 victory. Bitters earned the win in the circle, giving up 2 hits and striking out 6, improving to 4-0 on the season.
In game 2, Rhodes inked the books for a single run in the 1st, when Conn singled with 2 outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then came around to score on an RBI single from Bowen. The single by Conn was her 54th hit of the season, breaking the Rhodes single-season record for hits.
The Lynx added 2 more in the 3rd, courtesy of 2 Tiger errors, then put the game a away with a 6-run 3rd inning. Moore led of f the inning with a single, then advanced to 3rd on a double from Bowen. Jennifer Whatley hit a deep fly ball to score Moore, then Chelsea Peters doubled to score Bowen and put runners at second and third with 1 out. Back to back RBI singles from Evans and Venezia, followed by a 2-run double from Elise Suna capped off the inning and gave the Lynx a 9-0 lead after 3 innings.
Those 9 runs proved to be more than enough for Peters, who struck out 8 en route to tossing the first perfect game of her career. Peters improves to 11-8 on the season with the win.
Rhodes will take its 27-13 record into the SCAC Championships this weekend in Conway, AR. The Lynx will be the #2 seed out of the East Division, and will play the #3 seed from the West, Trinity, at 2pm on Friday. The Tigers and Lynx last met at the 2009 SCAC Championships, with the Lynx escaping with a 4-0, extra inning win en route to their runner-up finish in the SCAC.
