After splitting Saturday's doubleheader, Rhodes bounced back with a pair of wins on Sunday over Centre, taking the first game 8-2 and the second game 6-2.
Sara Bowen pitched 6 shutout innings in game 1, giving up just 3 hits to improve to 11-5 on the season, while
Kelli Zomer and
Allison Conn each had 3 hits to pace the offense.
Chelsea Peters picked up her 10th win of the season in game 2, giving up just 6 hits while striking out 8, and Zomer again led the offense with 2 singles and a home run. Rhodes is 23-13 and 4-8 in the SCAC, and returns to action this weekend with a 4-game series against Sewanee.
In Sunday's first game, Rhodes got on the board first, scoring twice in the top half of the 3rd to on a pair of RBI groundouts.
Megan Matthews led off with a single, followed by a bunt single by Conn. Rebekah Moore drew a walk to load the bases for Bowen. Bowen grounded to second and reached on a fielders' choice as Conn was forced at second, allowing Matthews to score, then
Elise Suna reached on a fielders' choice with a groundout to short to score Conn and give the Lynx a 2-0 lead.
The Lynx added another run in the 5th when Bowen ripped her 7 home run of the season, and added 3 more in the 6th on 3 straight 2-out hits from Zomer, Matthews and Conn.
Armanda Venezia led off the 6th with a single, but was still standing on second base when Zomer came to the plate with 2 outs. She came through with an RBI double, and then Matthews matched the feat with a double of her own, and came around to score on a single from Conn to give the Lynx a 6-0 lead.
Rhodes picked up a couple of insurance runs in the 7th, as Bowen led off with a double and scored on a double from Venezia. Venezia would score on a single from
Olivia Ryan to give the Lynx an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th. Centre took advantage of 2 walks and a Lynx error to score 2 runs off reliever
Cindy Bitters in the 7th, but Bitters battled out of the bases loaded jam by recording a strikeout and groundout to end the game.
Bowen improved to 11-5 on the season, and during the game broke Rhodes' single season strikeout record when she recorded her 157th strikeout of the season in the 3rd inning. Zomer and Conn and 3 hits for the Lynx, while Matthews, Bowen, Venezia and Ryan each had 2 hits to pace the offense.
Rhodes jumped out to a 2-0 lead again in game 2, this time picking up its first 2 runs in the top of the second. Bowen led off with a single, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Suna grounded to third, but was able to beat the throw when the Colonel third basemen double pumped on the throw to check Bowen at second. After a sacrifice bunt from Venezia, Ryan delivered a ground ball single up the middle to score Bowen and Suna to give the Lynx the early lead.
Kelli Zomer hit her 6th home run of the season in the 4th, a 2 run shot with 2 outs, to give the Lynx a 4-0 lead, but Centre battled back with 2 runs on 3 hits in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead back to 4-2. Rhodes capped off the scoring with a pair of runs in the 5th, on a 2-run double from Suna, giving the Lynx the 6-2 lead.
Peters gave up just 6 hits and struck out 8, improving to 10-8 on the season, while Zomer again led the offense with 3 hits, including the home run. Bowen added 2 hits for the Lynx.
The Lynx will honor their seniors this weekend, taking on Sewanee at 1pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday.
