Conn's Grand Slam Earns Split for Lynx

3/20/2010 9:45:31 PM

With the bases loaded and the Lynx trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th, junior Allison Conn connected with a 1-1 pitch, driving it over the left centerfield fence for a walk-off grand slam, lifting the Lynx to a thrilling 6-5 victory over DePauw in the second game of today's doubleheader.  Depauw took game 1 by a score of 7-2, behind a 13 strikeout performance from Tiger hurlers Megan Soultz and Kristen Barrow.

In game 1, Depauw got on the board first, scoring an unearned run in the second to take a 1-0 lead.  The Tigers would add to the lead in the 5th with 3 runs on 4 hits, and then add 3 more runs in the 7th to take a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th.    Rhodes attempted to rally, as Jennifer Whatley drew a walk, followed by 2-out singles from Megan Matthews and Conn to load the bases for Rebekah Moore.  Moore came through with a 2-run single to cut the lead to 7-2, but the rally fell short and the Lynx dropped the game, seeing their 15-game winning streak come to an end.

Chelsea Peters took the loss in the circle, going all 7 innings, giving up 8 hits and just 3 earned runs, while Conn and Elise Suna led the offense with 2 hits each.

Game 2 would be defined by the home run from start to finish.  Lynx starting pitcher Sara Bowen got things started in the second, when she led off with a solo shot to left to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead after 2 innings.  Depauw would answer in the top of the 4th when Rachel MacBeth drew a walk and Jen Kosinski lined a 3-1 pitch over the center field fence to give the Tigers the 2-1 lead after 4 innings.

The Tigers added to the lead in the 5th, and it was Kosinski who again did the damage.  With runners on the corners and 2 outs, Kosinski hammered a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall for a 3-run home run, giving the Tigers a seemingly comfortable 5-1 lead.

Rhodes cut into the lead in the bottom half of the 5th, on a lead off home run from Kelli Zomer, making it 5-2, and that is where the score remained until the bottom of the 7th.

Jennifer Whatley led off the 7th with a single down the left field line, followed by a walk by Zomer.  WIth runners on first and second, Matthews hit a grounder between short and third, which was fielded by shortstop Brianne Weeks, but the Tigers were unable to get Whatley at third.  With the bases loaded, Conn stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off grand slam, giving the Lynx the thrilling 6-5, comeback win.

Bowen improved to 8-2 on the season, giving up 6 hits and striking out 10, while Zomer, Whatley and Conn each had 2 hits to pace the Lynx offense.  All 11 runs in the game came courtesy of the long ball, with Depauw's Jen Kosinski tallying 5 RBI on her two round trippers, and Bowen, Zomer, and Conn accounting for all 6 of the Lynx runs with home runs of their own.

Rhodes improves to 19-5, and Depauw stands at 7-2, with both teams 1-1 in SCAC play.  The two teams return tomorrow for another doubleheader, with first pitch set for 12pm.
