Rhodes rallied for 5 runs in the bottom half of the 7th inning to force extra innings, but could not hold off the #7 Washington University Bears on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 12-9 in 8 innings. The Lynx out-hit the Bears 14-12, but 4 errors in the final two innings were too much for the Lynx to overcome.
The Bears got on the board first, with 4 consecutive 2-out hits in the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead, but Rhodes answered in the bottom of the inning, as
Sara Bowen brought
Kelli Zomer and
Megan Matthews home with a 2-run single to center to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Bears extended their lead to 4-2 in the 5th, scoring a run on a wild pitch, and picked up 2 more in the 5th to take a 6-2 lead heading into the 7th inning. An unearned run in the 7th would prove to be a crucial run for the Bears, as they took a seemingly comfortable 7-2 lead into the home half of the 7th.
However, the Lynx were not going down without a fight. With 2 outs and still trailing 7-2,
Elise Suna ripped a double to right to score
Sara Bowen and cut the lead to 7-3. A single for
Armanda Venezia put runners on 1st and 3rd, and after a
Katie Stich RBI single, the lead had been cut to 7-4 and the Lynx had runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.
Jennifer Whatley drew a walk, bringing Zomer to the plate with the bases loaded. She worked the count full, then drilled a bases-clearing double to left center, tying the score at 7. Matthews made solid contact, but Bears centerfielder Ashton Hitchcock was able to make the catch to end the inning and send the game into extra frames.
The Bears would score 4 runs in the top of the 8th, aided by 4 Lynx errors, and take a 12-7 lead into the bottom of the 8th. Rhodes' again attempted a rally, scoring 2 runs on a Washington University throwing error to cut the lead to 12-9, but was unable to sustain the rally, as the Bears went on to win 12-9.
Chelsea Peters took the loss in relief, giving up 6 runs, including 4 unearned, over the final 3 1/3 innings in relief of Rhodes starter
Sara Bowen. At the plate, Zomer was 3 for 4 with a double and 3 RBI to lead a Lynx offense that pounded out 14 hits. Rhodes falls to 3-3 on the season while the Bears improve to 2-0.
