For the first time since 2019, the Rhodes College men's lacrosse team defeated rival Sewanee, using a dominant second-half effort to earn an 18–14 victory Friday night at Crain Field.
Andrew Murphy led the way for the Lynx with five goals, while Liam Sullivan and Wyatt Bounds each added three. The win snaps a multi-year skid against Sewanee and improves Rhodes' position heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
Sewanee jumped out to a fast start, scoring five of the game's first six goals. The Tigers led 5–1 midway through the first quarter, but Rhodes responded with a 4–1 run to close the gap to 6–5 early in the second.
From there, the two teams traded goals in a fast-paced second quarter that featured nine combined scores. Loupassi and Root continued to produce for the Tigers, while Drew Litner played a key role in the Rhodes offense, tallying a goal and three assists before halftime. At the break, the teams were knotted at 9–9.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point, as Rhodes outscored Sewanee 5–2. Murphy scored three times in the frame, including a man-up goal assisted by Sullivan, as the Lynx built a 14–11 advantage heading into the fourth.
Sewanee pulled within two on a Loupassi man-up goal with 8:45 left in the game, but Rhodes responded with back-to-back goals from Murphy and Downes to push the lead to 18–13. Moran's final goal at 1:43 brought Sewanee within four, but it was too little, too late.
In total, Rhodes had eight players score, including John Mori and Drew Downes with two goals apiece. Litner finished with a game-high four assists.
The win marks Rhodes' first over Sewanee in six years and came in front of an electric home crowd. The Lynx will look to carry that momentum into their next match up as they continue conference play on Sunday, April 6, against Centre College for senior day.
