The red hot Rhodes College Baseball team traveled to Montgomery, Alabama today to play the Vermont State Castleton Spartans. Coming off of their 9th win in a row, the Lynx battled to push their win streak into double digits.
Rhodes took the lead in the top of the 2nd inning thanks to a Ben Burkhart double that drove home Brad Larson. In the top of the 4th, Myles Kruger drove in the second run of the game for the Lynx, extending their lead to 2-0. Unfortunately, the Lynx bats would go quiet for the next 5 innings, and the Spartans would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the 6th.
Down to their final 3 outs and trailing 3-2, the Rhodes offense came to the plate in the top of the 9th looking for a rally. After the first two batters of the inning reached base, Cooper Angilly singled in a run to tie the game 3-3. Brad Larson laid a perfectly placed bunt down the 3rd base line to load the bases and turn the lineup over to Ben Burkhart. Burkhart would hit a sacrifice fly to center field driving home Myles Kruger and giving the Lynx the lead for the first time since the 5th inning. Brandon Trichell added some insurance to the Lynx lead as he singled home Brad Larson to bring the score to 5-3 in favor of Rhodes.
Mick Arney would come back to the mound in the bottom of the 9th and shut down the Spartan bats in order, securing the save and the 10th consecutive victory for Rhodes College. Arney gets credit for both the win and the save as his record moves to 3-0.
The Lynx continue their historic start to 2025 as they improve their record to 11-1 on the season. They will play the hosting Huntingdon College Hawks in Montgomery tomorrow at 12 pm before they return home to Stauffer Field to square off against Fontbonne University on Sunday.
