The Rhodes College baseball team traveled this past weekend for a final conference series against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. The series consisted of a doubleheader on Saturday and game 3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Lynx got off to a hot start in game 1 as they took an early lead in the top of the 1st, thanks to RBI singles from Corbin Kinder and Brandon Trichell. The offense stayed hot most of the day as they would go on to plate 3 more runs in the top of the 2nd, giving them a 6-0 lead. The Stormy Petrels began clawing back, but the relentless Rhodes offense continued layering on runs. A 2-run homer from Cooper Kuriger followed by a Ben Burkhart 2 RBI double would be all it would take to give the Lynx the game 1 victory by a score of 11-4. Notable players of the game include Corbin Kinder, who notched 4 hits and 2 RBIs, and Cooper Kuriger, who picked up 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Brandon Trichell also continued his hot streak at the plate, recording 4 RBIs on the day.
Unfortunately, the Lynx were not able to carry their momentum into game 2, and they ended up losing by a score of 6-5. Highlights from the game include Corbin Kinder recording 4 hits and hitting home runs number 4 and 5 on the season while driving in 3 RBIs.
With the series tied heading into game 3, both teams were prepared to lay it all out on the line. The Oglethorpe offense exploded in this one as they plated a total of 16 runs. This would be plenty to put away the Lynx in game 3 by a score of 16-8. Though they would not come out victorious, the Lynx still put together a solid day at the plate. Corbin Kinder could not be stopped as he hit yet another home run, his 6th of the season. Ben Burkhart also left the yard, which brought his single-season home run total to 10, the most of any Rhodes baseball player since 1992. Kinder and Burkhart would both record 3 RBIs a piece in the contest.
The Lynx will play their final game of the regular season on Tuesday (April 23rd) at Stauffer Field against the Mississippi University for Women Owls. The game will begin at 3 pm and will be streamed on the Lynx Live Network.
