Men's Basketball advances to SAA Finals

Saturday, February 24, the Rhodes College Lynx took on the Oglethorpe University Petrels in the semifinals of the SAA Conference Tournament. This isn't foreign territory for the Lynx, as they were in the semifinals last year, but against their rivals Sewanee. A win today will be meaningful for this core group and the program in so many different ways. One would be breaking their curse at Berry College with their first win in several years, and two Rhodes would be getting revenge for their seniors by putting themselves in a position to win a SAA championship.

Arness Georgetown, The senior forward, was ready to get his revenge as he got the Lynx on the board with a three-point bomb. He finished a post-up opportunity on their second possession with a strong layup. However, in the first half, the Lynx were in their heads a little bit as they had a slow start. They struggled to stop Oglethorpe's leading scorer as he kept attacking the paint, which led to a bucket or two free throws. On offense, Oglethorpe's physicality made it hard for the Lynx to run their sets, and they started settling for jumpers. Down 16 with five minutes to go, the Lynx rallied together and went on an 8-2 run, cutting the lead to 8. Unfortunately, their momentum was disrupted by a last-second step-back three from Oglethorpe. As the buzzer ended, the halftime score was 37-26.

In the second half, Rhodes's defense finally clicked, and they dominated the first three minutes, going on a 14-3 run led by Phil Dotson and Trevor Lombard to tie the game 40-40. Both teams traded buckets until the game was tied once again, 47-47. Afterward, it was Rhodes's game to lose as they were in control for the remaining eleven minutes, holding Oglethorpe to only three points for ten out of those eleven minutes. Rhodes defeated Oglethorpe 68-61 to advance to the SAA Conference Tournament Championship. Once again, they proved that they are the most deadly second-half team in the SAA, outscoring their opponent 42-24 in this half and dishing out 9 assists with only 2 turnovers. The leading scorers for Rhodes were Phil Dotson with 19, Zavien Williams with 12, and Shawn Jones Jr. with 10.
