Men's Basketball falls short to Berry in SAA Championship

This past Sunday, the Rhodes College Lynx took on the one-seeded Berry College Vikings in the SAA Conference Championship. Rhodes found their groove at the end of the regular season and has made an amazing run to the championship, upsetting BSC and Oglethorpe. They are looking to finish the job and come back home with their first championship in seven years.

The junior guard, Zavien Williams, got the Lynx on the board first with a bomb from three-point range. The first half was competitive, as it was full of runs by both teams. Rhodes's defensive intensity and ever-changing defensive schemes kept Berry's explosive scoring at bay for the majority of the half. Rhodes may have gotten some cheap fouls called on them, but that didn't stop them from playing with high energy. On offense, the Lynx were a little stagnant, but a couple of step-back jumpers from Phil Dotson and some tough finishes in the paint from Arness Georgetown helped break any scoring droughts. With three minutes left in the half, Berry went on a 14-4 run to finish the half up 37-25.

That three-minute run from Berry at the end of the first half kind of sealed the deal for Rhodes as they tried to play catch-up with a team that doesn't make a lot of mistakes. It also didn't help that whenever Rhodes was close to forcing a shot clock violation or a bad shot, Berry would just make the shot. Berry's tough shotmaking and the fact that they blew up all of the Lynx's plays made winning this game nearly impossible for the Lynx. Rhodes tried all they could, but as the buzzer sounded, they were defeated 57-74. The scoring leaders were Zavien Williams with 17, Phil Dotson with 16, and Arness Georgetown with 13.
