The Rhodes College Baseball team opened their season with a bang this past Tuesday as they put up 10 runs in game one. After undesirable weather forced them to postpone their weekend plans, the eager Lynx were finally able to see their first action of the new season in the form of a two-game series against Centenary at USA Stadium. The Rhodes offense got off to a hot start in the 1st inning as
Corbin Kinder singled to left, driving in
Ben Burkhart. Shortly after,
Malcolm Rohlfing drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Danta Messina across, and freshman
Myles Kruger recorded his first college hit in the form of a 2 RBI single to cap off a 4-run 1st inning. The Lynx would throw 2 more runs up on the board in the 2nd inning thanks to RBIs from
Quinn Blackman and
Dante Messina. Rhodes first baseman
Daniel Hicks showcased his power in the 3rd inning as he blasted his first homer of the season to left field to extend the lead to 7. The scoring continued into the 4th with a sacrifice fly from
Eli Selby to drive in
Quinn Blackman, and
Corbin Kinder followed up with a line drive shot to left for a solo homer. Kinder would revisit left field in the 6th inning as he stroked a triple off of the wall that drove in Selby to secure his 3rd RBI of the game. While the offense had an impressive game, the pitching staff also put together a stellar performance. Lynx starter
Zach Sohosky went 5 strong innings, striking out 8 while only allowing 2 hits and a single earned run.
Reid Lampert,
Will May, and
Ben Daniel would combine in a relief effort that consisted of 4 innings of one-run ball. The result of game 1 would be a 10-2 Rhodes victory.
Corbin Kinder shined for the Lynx as he accounted for 3 hits and 3 RBIs and came up a double shy of the cycle.
The Lynx offense did not remain as potent in the second game as they were held scoreless until the 7th inning when
Dante Messina crossed the plate. The only RBI of the game for the
Lynx was produced in the 9th inning by a fielder's choice from
Keith Adams to bring in
Logan Luke. The final from game 2 was an 11-2 Lynx loss.
Rhodes will look to replicate their offensive efficiency from game 1 as they play their home opener on Stauffer field this Friday at 1:00 pm against Greenville University. You can also catch the Lynx in action on Saturday at 2:00 for the second game against Greenville and Sunday at 12:00 pm against Augustana College.
